TRAVEL

Pack your binoculars!

Getting there from overseas
Please fly into OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Direct flights are available from major cities worldwide. Many of our guests will be traveling from the Bay Area so you are welcome to coordinate flights to venture to Africa together.

All wedding festivities will take place at Mdluli Safari Lodge, located in the Kruger National Park (see the "Accommodation" page for more info).

Please fly into OR Tambo International Airport on the morning of Thursday 4 December. Aim for your flight to arrive no later than 11am.

There are two ways we recommend traveling from the airport to the lodge:

Short Flight
There are 50-minute flights from OR Tambo to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport outside the Kruger National Park. We will then organize a shuttle to take you to the lodge, which is a 45 minute ride. We recommend arriving at Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport no later than 3pm, in order to be picked up and arrive at Mdluli around 4pm.

Bus Ride
We will also be coordinating bus transportation from OR Tambo Airport to Mdluli Safari Lodge, leaving the airport at 12:30pm on Thursday 4 December. The bus ride from the airport to the lodge is approximately 5 hours, aiming to arrive at Mdluli at 6pm. It is also an amazing way to get a first glimpse of the country.

To help us plan your transfer, please specify which form of transit you prefer in your RSVP, and email your travel itinerary to us (wedding@alexanddiem.com) when you receive it.
Our local guests
You're welcome to join our bus group leaving from the airport on 4 December, or if you prefer to drive, we'll see you at the lodge! Please aim to arrive by 5pm, as we are planning a welcome event in the evening.
Visas
Guests from many countries, including the United States and EU, may enter South Africa without a visa for short stays. However, we recommend checking the South African Home Affairs website for the latest immigration requirements.
What to pack
We will be hosting a range of activities and events, including safari game drives and bush walks, as well as our formal events and the wedding day—and don't forget pool and lounge time! We will update the Attire page with formal event dress codes soon.

For safari activities we recommend comfortable neutral-colored clothing (ideal for blending into the natural surroundings), good closed-toe walking shoes, and a light jacket or fleece for night safari drives when it cools down. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and insect repellant are key.

For an extra special experience, definitely pack your binoculars and camera. Nothing beats zooming in on a leopard sitting in a tree.
Health and safety
No specific vaccinations are required to enter South Africa. The Kruger National Park is however situated in a malaria risk area. It is important to note that the risk of malaria is usually low, even in the summer months. Please check with your doctor about whether you prefer to take malaria tablets, but do bring some mosquito repellant!
Weather
December is the middle of gorgeous, hot summer in South Africa, with the Kruger seeing mostly beautiful sunshine and short summer afternoon thundershowers.
